Bereshit/Genesis Chapter 22 – The measure of a Man

Welcome

First posted SEPTEMBER 10, 2019

How did Abraham measure up to challenge contesting his obedience? His Elohim, YHWH, was sure of the character of his servant, but others in the divine council wanted to be certain of his measure. Abraham received the call about offering his beloved son Isaac as a whole burnt offering in a land that was three days journey. He heeded the request and went with his beloved son Isaac and two of his servants on the journey to carry out the request that was made of him. Isaac was fully aware of what a burnt offering was and he questioned his father about the lack of an animal to make the sacrifice. Abraham reassured his son that YHWH would provide. Both Abraham and Isaac did not waiver as each had a role to play. Isaac and The Anointed One share similar circumstances as both men are beloved of their fathers. They also were obedient to their fathers knowing that their lives are valued and that their actions would reap benefits.

Bereshit/Genesis Chapter 22 – The measure of a man

Supporting News Items

The month of August seemed to be the season of animal sacrifice. For those who follow the path of Islam Eid-Al-Adha, sometimes referred to as “feast of the sacrifice“, was commemorated. The premise is an alternative to Abraham and Isaac of Genesis 22. And in Israel, a test run of the ‘Red Heifer’ sacrifice and burning was observed. The objective seemed not to only burn the animal, but to apply scientific methods in the process to ensure that the whole animal is consumed by the fire.

The Burnt Offering

The whole burnt offering was the sacrifice Abraham was commanded to do. He prepared everything for the journey in order to execute the request made of him.

The Land of Moriah

Abraham, Isaac and the two servants took a three day journey and arrived in the land of Moriah. In total, this journey took six days, and Abraham returned vindicated about his character.

Human Sacrifice

Human sacrifice is strictly forbidden to YHWH Elohim, the Elohim of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the nation Israel. From an academic perspective, the concept of human sacrifice among the Semitic people seems to be non-starter, but The Book of Abraham seems to be indicating somethings different. But, this prohibition to ‘Child Sacrifice‘ was not heeded by Israel when they became a nation after the Exodus.

Entangled

The suitable alternative for Isaac was entangled in the Sabec, as the suitable alternative for Israel was entangled by his accusers.

Commentary

Genesis 22, traditionally termed “The Binding of Isaac” is a widely commented segment of the Torah. Because of the many circumstantial parallels between Isaac and The Anointed One, comments from a Christian/Messianic perspective is heavily biased towards the ‘Salvation’ message and the redemption of all mankind.
